The Segura river, ´Xecura´ for the Arabs, is the axis of the land of Murcia. It is the main collector of the most arid zone of the Iberian Peninsula. Its birth takes place in Fuente Segura (Jaén), 1700 meters above sea level, spreading out over 341 kilometres and draining into the Mediterranean Sea by the Alicante´s villa of Guardamar. Its main affluent is the Guadalentin.

Without the Segura, the great orchard of Murcia would be nothing but a vast dry land.

From the old river emerged the main ditches that nourished countless small ones. During its passage it has moved waterwheels and created  pools since the old times of the Islamic period. All this complex aquatic resourcefulness transformed the land of Murcia. The Segura is the father of ‘ la Huerta´ and the whole region, and simultaneously the most regulated and exploited river of all the great rivers of Spain.
