Insects are the most abundant and diverse group of the animal kingdom and we can find them in almost every milieu of the planet. These small animals have great significance for human beings and our economy.

Among them, Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths) , with around 150,000 species, and Coleoptera  (beetles), with 350,000 species, are the most popular due to its beauty and variety of colours, shapes and sizes. Its populations and, generally, populations of all the insects are threaten by the destruction of the habitat, pollution, illegal trade or the introduction of species among other factors.

We encourage you to know, through this module, diversity and dissemination of some emblematic species, a small sample of the more than a million species of  characterized species of insects that exist in the planet.
