Life emerged in the aquatic environment. First living  unicellular organisms grew in a ‘ nutrient sea’ , where they found everything that they needed for its development.

As living forms evolved, terrestrial animals ended by eventually became independent from water. But this independence is no such thing: basic functions as breathing, nutrient assimilation and reproduction keep being carried out in an aqueous medium.

In mammals and all terrestrial vertebrates, both the spermatozoon and egg are in aqueous medium while they are active. In the same way, if fertilization occurs and the foetus develop it is kept in the amniotic fluid until the birth, in the process called ´to break waters.
