When we heat it, a liquid becomes less dense and ascends. But when it moves away from the heat it gets colder, recovering its former density and sinking again. At the same time, the space left  by warm liquid is occupied by colder liquid, which will also ascend and fall . These vertical currents, commonly called convection currents, are a primary source of heat transfer.
