Lenses are optical systems formed by two or more refractive surfaces. The convex, convergent or positives are thicker on its centre forcing the wave to converge. Concave, divergent or negatives are thinner on the core and induce light’s divergence.
The behaviour of a light ray on the interface between two medium may be easily studied with the help of a laser. When the ray hits the interface it splits in two different rays, one reflected and another reflected. If the angle between the ray and the surface is very small, that is to say, the ray arrives with a high inclination to the surface, it won’t pass through the interface and total reflection will take place.
Reflection and refraction angles produced when light passes from one medium to another (for example, air – water) are determined by a numeric value called refraction index.
